Got your attention didn’t I?
Who doesn’t love free books? Oh the joy of having wonderful stories available to you at no cost.
I’m all for supporting authors. I believe we should purchase books. And I do. Lots and lots of them. More than I will ever read, but that is another story. 😉
Today I want to talk about the best place to find books to love without going broke.
Okay, you can’t hear me say it, but I want you to imagine the word being said with quiet reverence. An awed whisper.
I love libraries.
As a teenager, I worked a few jobs in the food industry. Those jobs were not my thing. In searching for a different low-paying-only-inexperienced-teens-can-do jobs, my mom suggested our public library.
That should have been obvious to me, but it wasn’t.
I still remember the feeling it gave me to entertain the thought. Me! Working at a library (awed whisper). I was sure that was beyond my reach. Only a few blessed people could work there. They had to be royalty or something.
My mom encouraged me to apply and I did. Miracle of miracles, I got a job as a page.
Does anyone else love that title?
I helped people check out books at the front desk. I shelved books that were returned. I spent hours surrounded by books.
Could heaven be any better?
One of the perks of working there was that I got advanced peeks at new books and new authors. Many romances found their way into my hands during that time.
Since I’ve been going to the library all of my life (see my post here about my first library card), I forget that others haven’t experienced their joy and wonder.
If that is you, I want to share these gems with you.
Libraries offer free books. Did you know that there was a time when people had to pay subscription fees to use a library? Not anymore.
Libraries have something for everyone. This is a romance blog so I’m assuming you read romances. Libraries have them. But they also have mystery, suspense, western, science fiction, speculative, etc. What type of fiction do you want to read today?
Libraries will take requests. Want to read some romances written by authors you heard about here but you can’t afford to spend money on an author you’re not sure about? Ask your library to get the book for you. Some libraries will order books based on their customer requests and some libraries are part of library systems that can borrow books from other libraries.
Libraries offer technology. Did you know that some libraries will lend out eBooks? No kidding. Those of you with electronic readers will appreciate that.
Libraries have more than just fiction books. I’m focusing on fiction here, but libraries have all sorts of resources available. The list is very long so I’ll just suggest that you check out your library for those treasures.
Now, I’m turning the conversation over to you.
Do you go to the library?
What is your favorite thing about your library?
Does your library offer a special resource that you were surprised to find out about?
